ISSUE 29: South Fork Lodge + River Runs Through It

My travels this summer took me to Swan Valley Idaho and the recently renovated property, South Fork Lodge.  Acquired by well-known angler and guide Oliver White and late-night host/skilled fisherman Jimmy Kimmel a few years back, the Lodge is situated on a stunning bend in the South Fork of the Snake River, not too far outside Jackson Hole. Not only was the fishing some of the best in the world – the lodge itself is unmatched with amazing locally-sourced food, panoramic views and the wonderful Machete bar which is an affectionate tribute to Evel Knievel – who tried (and failed) to jump the Snake River Canyon in 1974.

And whether you are visiting South Fork Lodge or just dreaming of getting out on the river, the perfect book to read (or revisit, as I do often) is the classic A River Runs Through It and other Stories by Norman Maclean.  I feel refreshed and relaxed when I’m out on the water, and reading this book helps me connect to that feeling, until I’m able to return again.
