ISSUE #6: Reaching Out
“Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every New Year find you a better man.”
– Benjamin Franklin
A new year is a great time to spend looking forward to new adventures and for me, the best time to take time to appreciate old friendships. Nearly 14 years ago I had the opportunity to meet and spend time with John and Kym Davey of Shingleback and Red Knot winery, based in the southernmost part of the Australia’s McLaren Vale, not far from the town of Adelaide. From there, both a friendship and partnership flourished.
Although we live hemispheres apart, we have enjoyed countless visits to the other’s respective country. When we host, we always seek out new experiences—nearly all of them related to the great outdoors. When travel isn’t possible, through the written word (I’m big on using craft stationery) or a spontaneous phone call, we stay in touch. It’s the perfect example of an enduring friendship, for which I’m so grateful.
This year I hope you’ll reach out to a longtime friend and make their day. I’ve resolved to do more of this in the coming year. Whether it’s a visit, card or call, make it happen and affirm those relationships with a meaningful gesture. Cheers.
